For the last ten-plus years I’ve done cloud and DevOps architecture — GCP, AWS, and Azure — for federal contractors in GovCloud, for healthcare systems, and for construction firms. Most of that work is invisible when it’s done right: migrations nobody notices, pipelines that just run, environments that pass an audit without a scramble the week before.

Then a general contractor put a problem in front of me that infrastructure couldn’t solve.

Fifty years in business. Fifty years of contracts, RFIs, change orders, submittals, and correspondence — tens of thousands of PDFs, and the knowledge of what was actually in them lived in the heads of about four people. When an owner sent a letter referencing a decision from 2011, answering it meant somebody digging for a day. Sometimes the person who knew had already retired.

That’s not a filing problem. That’s an institutional memory problem, and it walks out the door every time somebody takes their pension.
